Diseases

A plant can be infected yet you will not see any insect on them as they can be infected by a viral or a fungal infection. Root Rot, Black or reddish spots or bulbous growths seen on leaves are signs of plant disease. Leaves, buds or flowers which are dull in color are also suspect.

Many type of plant disease cannot be stopped once it spreads. Prevention is the key to the control of plant diseases.

Keep your farm, lawn and garden clean. Remove weeds, dead grass and leaves. Do not use infected or suspect leaves for composting, or mulch them with a mower, since that can spread fungus spores.

Consult an expert regarding planting disease resistant varieties and certified disease-free seeds.

Always use well-drained soil. If your soil is compacted or of heavy clay composition, add sand or peat moss as necessary.

Repeat the treatment every week or 10 days. More frequent applications may be necessary during hot, moist weather when plant diseases tend to be most severe.

Weeds

Weeds can harbour insects and plant disease organisms and, if unchecked, they can injure your crop, flowers, vegetables or lawn by depriving them of water, manure and sunlight.

The weed seeds, the roots, rhizomes and other underground tissues, the stem, the foliage or the apical shoots are places where a herbicide should be used.

Pest management and fertilization go a long way to prevent weeds, weeds can effect the healthiest and best cared-for fields , lawns and orchards Herbicides should be used at pre-emergent or post-emergent stage.

Pre-emergent herbicide are applied to the soil surface at the time the crop/seed is sown or immediately after sowing before the crop/plant emerges.

Post-emergent herbicides can be applied after the crop/plant has emerged but before the weeds are present.

Identification of a weed, is vital for proper treatment. Once identified, the proper herbicide should be applied. Examine your field and garden periodically for signs of weed growth. It is usually a simple matter to prevent further spread with occasional directed spraying.
